About

Welcome to the Tea House Engel's Tuin – a place of peace, taste and history

In the heart of the city park Engels' Tuin in Ootmarsum stands a special tea house. Built around 1890 as a garden house for mayor of the palace Wennemar Jan Engels van Beverforde, it was later inhabited and managed by his sister Hendrika Antonia Engels – affectionately called 'Engels' Jufferke' by the people of Ootmarsum. She donated the house and garden to the Overijsselse Landbouw Maatschappij in 1917. Eventually it became a public park, and in 1953 the tea house was renovated and over the years it was given various functions.

Engels' Garden is a green oasis in the middle of the town, with winding paths, a pond full of ducks, old trees and an impressive sequoia that towers high above everything. The park exudes peace and charm, every season anew.

When we – Yulia and Ralph – discovered the building, we immediately felt that this was the place where everything could come together: our love for tea, for nature, for creativity and hospitality. With our diverse backgrounds and skills – from art and craft to travel and cooking – we saw in this garden house an ideal place to bring our vision to life. We renovated it ourselves, with great care and natural materials. The colours and textures are inspired by the sea: soft green, sand colour, wood, marmorino (limestone) and a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to be still.

An important starting point for us is the bringing together of different tea cultures. Although all tea traditions have their origins in China, Western culture has developed its own way of enjoying tea since the discovery of tea. In our tea house, we honor both approaches: you can drink tea from a cup or pot in the classic way, enjoy an extensive High Tea, or get to know Gong Fu Cha – the refined Chinese tea ceremony. The basis is always the same: loose, pure tea of high quality. For those who prefer caffeine-free drinks, we have a carefully selected selection of herbal teas and fruity blends.

What do we offer:

  • Authentic Tea ExperiencesGong Fu Cha, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony

  • Homemade cakes and sweets – prepared with love,

  • Lunches – fresh and made with care, from local organic ingredients

  • High tea – on request,

  • Top floor or the entire house for rent – for private gatherings,

  • Terrace in the green

With us it is all about attention: for taste, for the place, for the moment. You are most welcome to come and taste, enjoy and catch your breath.
